El Paso infectious disease expert says it’s ‘fair’ for parents to be on the fence when it comes to vaccinating children
EL PASO, Texas (KVIA) -- Good Morning El Paso's Mauricio Casillas spoke to Dr. Ogechika Alozie, an El Paso-based infectious disease expert, about what parents should consider when it comes to vaccinating their children against Covid-19.
"I think it's important for them to understand that this vaccine is safe," he said. "Whether they get it or not is up to them [parents]. What is the risk to their child? Does their child have some immune condition? I think it's important as we go through this to give parents those options."
Dr. Alozie said since the risk of a child getting complications from the virus is significantly lower compared to older adults, parents should not feel pressured into vaccinating their children.
He advises them to do what they think is best for their children.
"I think if you're on the fence, you're on the fence. I really don't think that this is a time to be performative or do virtue signaling around being a good person or a bad person around vaccines for kids 12-15," Dr. Alozie said. "If you're a parent who wants to get the vaccine [for your child] absolutely go and get it. If you're on the fence, I think it's also fair to sort of wait out this summer and consider getting it by the time kids go back to school."
