300+ Socorro Students Lead Area’s Largest Protest

SOCORRO, TX. – Over three hundred Mission Valley high school studentstook to the streets andprotested for hours under an overpass on Loop 375, by the US-Mexico port of entry.

Shortly after 2pm, students from Socorro High were released from the morning’s lockdown situation and allowed to go to lunch. A group of students then left campus, met at a nearby fast-food restaurant and then to the street.

Witnesses have the group size in excess of 300 students, however the group gained members as it progressed toward Loop375.

Our ABC-7 followedthe group to the Zaragoza International Bridge, however as of 2:55pm their direction hadonce again turned west ward. By 4pm the students had taken up a position under the Loop 375 bridge, near the port of entry.

El Paso PD, Socorro PD and Socorro ISD policefollowed the group as a precaution and no arrests were made.

Earlier in the day, Socorro students had planned a morning walk out, however the campus was locked down. According to our ABC-7 crew, non-Socorro ISD students attempted to enter the campus and were detained.
