NM Lawmakers Take Steps To Outlaw Cockfighting

LAS CRUCES, NM- New Mexico lawmakers are a couple of steps closer to outlaw cockfighting throughout the state.

New Mexico’s Senate Convservation Committee has approved a bill that would outlaw cockfighting which some animal activists says is well over due.

Cockfighters and club owners ABC-7 spoke with in Otero County, where cockfighting is still legal, saythey’ve been in the cockfighting industry their entire lives and the new law would force people out of business.

New Mexico Senator, Phil Griego says it’s a local issue that should be taken up by local government,”it’s terrible when the state comes in and tells you what to do and what not to do.”

The bill is now set to move to the judiciary committee and New Mexico’s legislature has until March 17th to make their decision.
