‘Doppler’ Dave Speelman
“Doppler” Dave Speelman grew up in Oak Park, Illinois (first suburb west of Chicago).
I received my Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree.
My first job out of graduate school was in Jackson, Mississippi, working for the National Weather Network (now called “Weather Vision” www.weathervision.com) forecasting and voicing radio weather forecasts for station’s all across the country. Part of my daily routine was covering the state of Florida and Louisiana with weather coverage on both the Florida and Louisiana State Radio Networks. While doing radio weather, I began to break out in television doing daily weather coverage for TV stations across the country while also working weekends for the local ABC affiliate.
It was in Jackson that I met my wife Nelda who was a high school counselor and church music/youth director (met her after she was interviewed on the tv station I worked at). We got married and moved to Amarillo, Texas, where I was hired at the local NBC affiliate. I covered all kinds of severe weather (tornado alley) from tornadoes to winter storms. Following my 4 years there, we packed our bags and headed to El Paso where I have been since December of 1999.
My wife and I have 3 boys – Luke (2000), Nathan (2002) and Mark (2005). If you see me on the weekends, it’s likely you will see me with my boys’ doing “boy stuff.” This also allows my wife a break on the weekends! (she is a stay-at-home Mom and gets worn out with all the testosterone!)
