DEA Nabs Alleged Leader Of Local Drug Trafficking Ring

EL PASO, TX – The head of a local drug trafficking organization was arrested late Thursday.

The Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) executed a search warrant for the residence at 5433 Yarmouth Lane and arrested Byron Segura, officials say. Segura allegedly heads an organization responsible for the importation and distribution of multi-ton quantities of marijuana.

Segura was arrested without incident and a small amount of marijuana was seized along with three vehicles and an unspecified weapon.

John J. Riley, DEA Special Agent in Charge, stated, “This investigation was a model of cooperation and demonstrates the extremely high degree of effectiveness that can be achieved when federal, state and local law enforcement agencies combine their talents and resources to combat drug trafficking.”

According to officials, the marijuana allegedly smuggled and distributed by Segura’s organization was destined for numerous locations throughout the country, including Chicago, Detroit, Memphis and Indiana. Segura’s organization delivered millions of dollars in American currency to their source of supply in Mexico, they added.

The execution fo the warrant yielded 4,800 pounds of marijuana, 10,000 tablets of ecstasy, 332 grams of cocaine and approximately $1.25-million dollars, the agency announced.

Friday, Segura appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Michael McDonald and was ordered to be held without bond.
