Remembering The September 11 Attacks
EL PASO, TX. – It was six years agoTuesday morning that terrorists attacked the United States.
Americans across the country remembered those who died that fateful day and that includes the borderland. At Fire Station 11 in central El Paso, the firefighters held a memorial. Whenpeople think of 9-11, some of the strongest and most moving images are of the firefighters and police officers and other first responders who gave everything to try and save people that day.
Though they were not there, firefighters fromthe borderland feel a strong connection to those who were; those who went into the Twin Towers when everyone else was running out, those who made the ultimate sacrifice doing what they loved. Tuesday morning at 8 o’clock, firefighters from across the region gathered at the Firefighters’ Memorial to commemorate their fallen brothers and sisters in a “Tribute to 9/11 ceremony”.
Six years after that awful day, firefighters say remembering is so important. “That event there, kind of changed the way we as ElPasoFire Department respond tocertain incidents and those 343 thatgave up their lives, were doing what they loved. In general, that’s why we do what we do.” said Kris Menendez of the El PasoFire Department. At Station 11, 314 S. Leone, the firefighters are going to hold a tribute to 9/11 memorial ceremony at 8 a.m. to which the public is invited.
There are many other ways people can honor those who lost their lives on 9/11 across the borderland. Governor Perry has declared that flags be flown at half mast and several area schools are holding flag ceremonies as well.
