UPDATE: Student Who Collapsed At School Dies In Hospital

EL PASO, TX — ABC 7 has learned a student who passed out in class at El Dorado High School on Wednesdayhas died.

Officials with the Socorro Independent School District said the student, a Junior,had just taken a standardized test and was getting up from his seatwhen hefell unconscious.

The boy, who wasn’t identified, had no vital signs when he collapsed. School staff had to use a defibrillator to revive him. When they arrived, emergency medical crews continued to care for the student and they took him to Del SolMedical Center.

District officials confirmed the boy died later while receiving treatment at the facility.

The Superintendent of the school district, Sylvia Atkinson, was to meet in the afternoon with the boy’s family, district spokeswoman Minerva Baumann said.

Counselors have been sent to the school to assist any student who may have found the incident upsetting, she said.

“A student at El Dorado High School collapsed today at school, was rushed to Del Sol Medical Center and passed away this afternoon. We sincerely regret this loss and our condolences go out to the family. The 17 year old junior had just finished taking the PSAT test just after 1pm when he collapsed.

The teacher monitoring the test immediately called the school nurse and trainer who began administering CPR until emergency medical services paramedics arrived on the scene.

The student’s parents were contacted immediately and he was taken to Del Sol Medical Center where he was pronounced dead. Through the district’s rapid notification system, parents of all El Dorado Students are being notified. A letter is also going home to inform parents.

Tomorrow, an additional 18 counselors will be at El Dorado to offer counseling to students and staff members. Our deepest sympathy goes out to the family.”
