El Paso Volunteers Head For California To Help
EL PASO, TX. -A small group of El Pasoans are about to do anything they can for the nearly one-million Californians now homeless.
Believe it or not, there were only four people here in town who had enough training to and go work at Red Cross shelters in the fire zone.ABC-7wasthere asUTEP student Jaymie Orozco gave her family the news.
She’s taking a 2 week break from class to help those who have lost everything. She and her cousin Michelle are two of four El Paso volunteers ready to work.”It’s good to have family with me,” said Orozco.
“They had all their classes, credentials, background check. It’s imperative that we have trained people,” said James Parks of the American Red Cross. The pair packed their emergency kits as they waited for the specifics on their travel plans.
These kits include much more than typical necessities. “At this point my stomach hurts. I hopeI don’t leave anything out,”added Orozco. The American Red Cross is asking more El Pasoans to follow in Jaymie and Michelle’s footsteps even ifit’s impossible to drop everything and head to California.
There are both background checks and training involved. Butfor those who meet the criteria, they mightbe able to leave for California in a week or two. There is a special meetingThursday evening at the Red Cross. Those interested should call 915-592-0208.
