Texas Gasoline Prices Fall, El Paso Still Lowest In State

HOUSTON (AP) – Retail gasoline prices fell across Texas this week for the third week in a row.

Regular self-serve averaged $2.87 per gallon in the 11 cities surveyed, according to the AAA Texas gas price survey released Friday.

That was 3 cents less than last week but 84 cents more than at the same point of 2007. Nationally, the pump price fell below $3 to $2.99 per gallon, a drop of 2 cents from last week.

“The slowing of the economy and fears of a recession appear to have curtailed motorists demand for gasoline,” said AAA Texas spokeswoman Rose Rougeau.

“That has resulted in an increase in inventories of crude and a decrease in the price of crude from the highs of nearly a $100 a barrel to the current $90. If oil prices continue falling, retail gas prices are expected to retreat further.”

El Paso had the lowest average price of $2.82 per gallon, down a penny from last week. The Austin-San Marcos area had the highest average gas price in Texas with $2.92 per gallon, 2 cents less than last week.

These are average per-gallon prices of regular, self-serve gasoline in Texas and nationally, as well as the change from last week, according to the AAA Texas Weekend Gas Watch released Friday:
