N.M. Penalties Increased For Domestic Violence
SANTA FE (AP) – Governor Richardson has signed legislation that toughens penalties for domestic violence.
A third conviction of battery on a household member will become a fourth-degree felony, punishable by up to 18 months in prison.
Four or more convictions will be a third-degree felony. Currently, domestic violence is a misdemeanor punishable by up to 364 days in jail and a $1,000 fine, regardless of the number of repeat convictions.
The law will apply to convictions on or after July 1st, 2008.
