Students In Canutillo Join Hands To Salute Troops

EL PASO — Final preparations are now underway for the Welcome Home Heroes Parade in Downtown El Paso, an event to honor local troops who served in Iraq.

At Canutillo High School, students in an advanced floral design class are working overtime, fashioning butonnieres and other decorations.

“I couldn’t have been prouder of our kids,” teacher Keeley Muncrief said. “They’ve jumped in, they wanted to support the troops who are doing so much for us.”

Some of Muncrief’s students have been directly affected by the war and they said they were happy to help out with the parade.

“I love being in this class,” said Vienna Sepulveda. “I love making all this stuff, especially to help out because I know how it feels. My cousin is a soldier.”

“I was glad we were able to help in some way,” said Sonia Alvarez, another student. “My brother is actually a soldier and I’m really proud of him.”

“I can understand the sacrifices they make, leaving their families and it’s really painful not knowing about them for weeks and whether they’reOK or not,” Sonia said. “I’m really thankful that my brother is OK and that he wasn’t one of those people killed, because I don’t know what I’d do if I was in their place. It’s very sad.”

Canutillo High School’sROTC cadets are also taking part in the parade, and youngsters from the town’s middle school, who wrote letters to 4-1 Cav soldiers while they were in iraq, will release yellow balloons along the parade route.
