Gary was born in Chicago, and raised in the nearby suburb of Forest Park, right next to Oak Park, the suburb made famous by Frank Lloyd Wright. Gary grew up and lived there for 22 years with his parents, three brothers and one sister, and was known to be able to eat a half-gallon of ice cream in one sitting. His father and three of his four grandparents were all born in Germany, and his mother is U.S. born of German immigrant parents. In his youth, Gary’s family enjoyed camping and other excursions for summer vacations, and he still loves to travel.

Gary attended St. John Lutheran Grade School in Forest Park, Proviso East High School in Maywood, IL., where his classmates included Dennis Franz,former star of ABC’s NYPD Blue. At the University of Illinois in Chicago, earned a BA in Political Science. He came to El Paso by way of Fort Bliss courtesy of the U.S. Army, and has lived and worked here most of the years since 1968. Gary’s extensive broadcast experience includes:

Gary has been married since 1990 to Brigitte von Ahn who is German-born, and an accomplished artist who emigrated to the U.S. after the marriage. They have no children. Gary’s interests include reading history and occasionally some fiction. He enjoys archery and photography, which he supplements with videotape. He also has a nice telescope given to him by his wife, and hopes to have the time soon to take an astronomy course so he can use it properly. Although Gary still possesses a sweet tooth, he says that now his ice cream limit is one bowl! Watch Gary daily at 5 & 10pm on ABC 7 “Where News Comes First.”
