Hurricane Ike Closures, Evacuations In Texas

HOUSTON (AP) – The approach of Hurricane Ike is prompting officials to close Bush Intercontinental and Hobby airports on Friday.

Airport spokeswoman Marlene McClinton says JetBlue and AirTran will operate until 3:30 p.m. but other carriers at Hobby would stop flying at 9 a.m. The last flight at Bush Intercontinental will be at 2 p.m. Friday.

Ike is expected to become at least a Category 3 storm, with winds upward of 111 mph, before it comes ashore, the National Hurricane Center in Miami said.

Some forecasts indicate Ike could grow to a Category 4, with winds of at least 131 mph, and could strike at or near the Houston-Galveston metropolitan area.

Emergency officials warned it could drive a storm surge as high as 18 feet.
