Houstonian Evacuates By Thumb And Foot

SAN ANTONIO (AP) – James Howington had to take a hike because of Ike.

The Houston construction worker only had enough money to put his girlfriend and son on a bus to California. But he had to get out of the hurricane’s way, too.

So, Howington hoofed it. It took him two days of walking and hitchhiking to reach a shelter in San Antonio. His one change of clothes got soaked on the way, as did his cell phone.

Now, that Hurricane Ike has passed, Howington has to figure out a way to get back home.
