Smoke Fills Upper Floors Of Sierra Medical Center

EL PASO, Texas –Several people were evacuated due to heavy smoke in thetop floors of Sierra Medical Center Tuesday afternoon.

Authorities said that an electrical transformer problemin an elevator was the cause ofthesmoke. No fire was reported and no patients were affected, hospital officials said.

Nine fire units responded to the smoke. While fire crews looked for the source of the smoke, no one was let into the hospital.When the source of the smoke was discovered,the airflow was reversed, pushing the smoke out of the elevator shaft through a vent at the top of the building.

The smoke quickly cleared. The hospital resumednormal operationsby 4:45 p.m., officials said.
