Gary Warner Honored With Conquistador Award

By ABC-7 Reporter/Producer Daniel Marin

EL PASO, Texas – Longtime KVIA news anchor Gary Warner is used to talking about El Paso’s city council, but Tuesday morning, the city council was talking about Gary Warner.

Warner was awarded with the Conquistador Award, the highest honor anyone can receive from the city of El Paso. The announcement was greeted with applause and a standing ovation from elected officials and El Pasoans in the audience.

As he does with every newscast he anchors, Warner brought his charm and wit with him to City Hall.

“I know that over the years I may have said some not-so-nice things about a lot of people in this room,” Warner confessed. “Let me say now that I’m sorry! I promise I won’t do it again…Well, starting tomorrow.”

After a 35-year career at KVIA-TV, Warner is slated for retirement after his final newscast Wednesday night.

In celebration of his run at Channel 7, KVIA threw a goodbye party in Warner’s honor Tuesday evening on the ABC-7 patio overlooking west El Paso.
