Sheriff’s Office Not Likely To Pursue More Charges Against Jackson

Sheriff’s office not likely to pursue more charges against Jackson

By ABC-7 I-Team Reporter Martin Bartlett

EL PASO – The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office told ABC-7’s I-Team, University of Texas at El Paso basketball star Stefon Jackson will likely not face anymore state charges stemming from the Friday arrest of his cousin, Willie Harden, Jr., or the Tuesday arrest of Lamar Reid at Jackson’s apartment.

Jackson was arrested Tuesday on charges that he helped Harden evade arrest on an attempted murder charge.

Another fugitive, accused murderer Lamar Reid, also turned up at Jackson’s apartment on Tuesday. Reid’s charges stem from the Easter Sunday shooting death of a 20-year-old man in Philadelphia.

Harden is facing two attempted murder charges both of which stem from a shooting outside an Elks Club in New Castle, Pennsylvania, near Pittsburgh.

Deputy Jesus Tovar, a spokesman for the El Paso County Sheriff Office, said once the investigation is completed, it’ll be turned over to the district attorney’s office.

Renee Railey, a spokeswoman El Paso District Attorney Jaime Esparza, confirmed that the office has not yet received the case.

Harden was arrested at a fast food restaurant on North Mesa Street near the UT-El Paso campus on Friday afternoon, according to investigators.

Reid was with Harden at the time of the arrest. While he wasn’t arrested at the time, he was detained and entered into a nationwide criminal database.

He wasn’t arrested because no warrant had been issued. But, because he was detained he was entered into another national database, and that’s what likely tipped off investigators in Pennsylvania that Reid was hiding out in El Paso.

As of Wednesday night, both harden and Reid remain in the El Paso County Detention facility.

They’re both likely to return to the Pennsylvania to face charges there.

Jackson bonded out Tuesday, a few hours after his arrest.
