Former Deputy Constable Indicted In Shooting Incident

EL PASO — Former Precinct Six Deputy Constable Mario Ramos was indicted by a federal grand jury in relation to an August 18 shooting, according to a spokeswoman with the District Attorney’s Office.
The indictment was handed down in the 168th District Court and Ramos will now face charges of Aggravated Assault.
An investigation by the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office revealed Ramos shotJuan Ortegon after a traffic stop in east El Paso near Lee Trevino. Witnesses at the scene said Ramos and Ortegon got into a fight whenOrtegon attempted to flee.
Early this month, Ramos was fired by Precinct Six Constable Alex Gamboa because of “off-duty misconduct.”
A few days after his firing, Ramos was indicted on a charge of sexual assault for allegedly raping a woman in May of this year. He was arrestedand then released on bond.
The former deputy is also the subject of allegations of abuse by three men who claim he used excessive force earlier this year. Guerrero Montes, his son Ivan, and a third man allege Ramos beat them without cause during a traffic stop on February 22.
Ramos has a long history of misconduct dating back to previous jobs.
Records show he quit the Socorro Police Department in 2005 while being investigated for allegedly using excessive force.Those same records also reveal he quit the El Paso Department of Public Safety in 2006 while being investigated for “belligerent and unruly” conduct.
In 2007, he quit the Anthony Police Department while being investigated for misconductduring a traffic stop.
