Lower Valley Water District Trying To Improve Water Quality For Residents
In Clint, as well as other areas in the Lower Valley, the water truck comes in, fills up, and heads out to houses in the neighborhood.
That’s because many in this rural area don’t have running water.
“Many people who live out in the outskirts of some of these small towns and communities…on the water basis, they’ll use wells or possible have water hauled in through private companies and then on wastewater, most people are on septic systems,” says David Carrasco, general manager of the Lower Valley Water District.
However, the LVWD is trying to change that by adding water lines to the outskirts of Clint, Socorro, and San Elizario. It’s something Carrasco knows all too well.
“when I was a young child, I grew up in the Socorro area and we had a well – and I say that story all the time – we have the faucet and we have the glass filled up and then we’d see sediment floating around in there and we’re just like ‘wow’,” says Carrasco.
He says it’s an ongoing that will take time to complete, adding that one problem is the cost for a water line connection, which often increases with the size of a property.
However, Carrasco is optimistic that residents covered by the Lower Valley Water District will all eventually have access to running water.
