Residents Of Anthony, NM Voting Today On Incorporation

ANTHONY, N.M. (AP) – Residents of Anthony will vote today to decide whether the southern New Mexico community should become incorporated.

Voting started at 7 a.m. and runs to 7 p.m. Election officials say 2,627 people are eligible to cast ballots. During a monthlong early voting period that ended Saturday, 136 ballots were cast.

Proponents of incorporation say the community on the Texas-New Mexico border has languished over the years under Dona Ana County’s government. They say forming a city will give residents economic development, better services and less crime.

Opponents have expressed concern about increased government and higher taxes.
