LC Police Continue To Investigate Officer-Involved Shooting

New details have emerged in an officer-involved shooting that took place Sunday, January 17 in Las Cruces.

According to Las Cruces Police, the officers are 28-year-old Manuel Frias and 24-year-old Isiah Baker.

Police are continuing to investigate the death of 25-year-old Anthony Medrano, and say he died from at least one gunshot wound to his chest.

The shooting happened shortly after 4pm January 17 in the 3000 block of Petunia Lane. Investigators say Medrano refused to comply with the officers’ commands and threatened them.

In addition, authorities say he confronted Officer Frias with a butcher knife and an aluminum baseball bat. According to investigators, it appeared the officers were forced to shoot Medrano in order to stop his aggression.

Officials say Baker has been a Las Cruces Police officer since September 2007, while Frias has been a police officer there since June 2008.

Following standard protocol, both officers remain on administrative leave.
