UTEP Softball Team Loses to No. 14 Texas

The UTEP softball team dropped a twinbill to No. 14 Texas on Wednesday in Austin. The Miners fall to 15-8 before opening conference play on Saturday at home.

The Miners combined for just six hits on the day compared with the Longhorns’ 21. Texas was able to convert, defeating UTEP 9-0 and 6-1, respectively.

UTEP was only able to get off one hit in the day’s opener, a double by Kia Moore. Moore scored the Miners’ only run in the nightcap.

Stacie Townsend (13-5) suffered the Game 1 loss, giving up six runs on nine hits in 4 2/3 innings of play. She had just four K’s in the contest.

Townsend and the Miners held the Longhorns scoreless through four innings of play. A six-run fifth inning was UTEP’s demise, as five singles, a double and a bases loaded walk, gave Texas six RBIs in the frame. They added another three for the six inning run rule.

Joanna Krienitz (1-2) was the losing pitcher in the second game, allowing five runs, scattering seven hits, giving up two walks and collected two K’s.

Kelly Curran, who came in relief, tossed the final 1.2 innings, giving up one run.

UTEP’s only run of the day came in the top of the sixth frame when and error scored Moore.

The Miners look to bounce back when they open conference action in a three-game home series with Marshall. The two teams square off in a doubleheader on Saturday with first pitch slated for 3 p.m. The series concludes on Sunday at noon.
