Boy, 5, Injured During Head-On Collision
A five-year-old boy sitting in the front seat of a Ford Focus was injured during a head-on collision early Tuesday morning, police officials said.
The crash happened at about 7:45 a.m. on the 600 block of Zaragoza near the Zaragoza International Port-of-Entry.
Police officials said Randy Soto, 19, of the 12000 block of Abigail, was headed north on the street in a 2001 GMC Sierra. Investigators said Soto was speeding, lost control of his truck, and swerved onto oncoming traffic.
That’s when he struck a Ford Focus head on, according to police officials. The car was being driven by Robert Fierro, 24, of the 400 block of S. Schutz.
Police said a five-year-old boy on the front passenger’s seat of the Ford Focus was not on a child safety seat and was not restrained by a safety belt. The child suffered serious injuries and was rushed by emergency crews to University Medical Center.
Police said the GMC Sierra also struck a 2002 Suzuki motorcycle. The rider of the motorcycle, Jorge Hernandez, 21, of the 11400 block of Lone Wolf, managed to jump out of the motorcycle and avoided being hit by the GMC.
Soto was also taken to a local hospital for treatment of injuries.
Charges may filed pending the outcome of the investigation.
