Council Approves Changes To Sun Metro Service

City council voted Tuesday to go ahead with several changes to Sun Metro services.

Council supported plans to move Sun Metro’s bus headquarters from the Old Union Depot to Airport land off Montana. However, the final say will come from the Metropolitan Planning Organization.

Mayor John Cook said Sun Metro has simply run out of room at their current location.

Council also voted to allow the Jacobs engineering firm out of Dallas to continue studying the bus rapid transit system options along four major corridors using smart technology to stop lights along routes, so green lights coincide with approaching buses.

Cook said the changes will cut an average of 20 minutes off the average bus ride and will begin on Alameda street. The project is expected cost the city about $30 million.

In the future, routes along Mesa, Montana and Dyer will also be improved with the use of federal money.
