Police Looking For Hit-And-Run Driver

A cyclist remains in critical condition this morning after being hit by a driver who didn’t even stop to check if he was all right.

The crash happened Thursday night shortly after 10:30 near the 7300 block of South Desert Boulevard in West El Paso.

Police are asking for the public’s help in finding the person who hit 51-year-old Ruben Lemus, but they have very little information to go on.

ABC-7 spoke to Lemus’ neighbor in Anthony, New Mexico, who was shocked to hear of the news. “He would love to ride his bike around here after work,” said Jose Alfredo Garcia, the neighbor.

Friends and family of Lemus say he would ride his bicycle to work every day down South Desert Road; what they never expected was that he would be hit by a car and left critically injured.

Garcia says he is saddened to hear his neighbor was essentially left for dead after heading to work at the Leviton plant in West El Paso.

Police say he was wearing a helmet and did have a flashing red light on his bicycle.

For reasons still unknown, Lemus was hit, and the driver took off, leaving him on the ground along a dark road.

Lemus would not make it for his overnight shift at the plant, and those who know him are left wondering why the driver didn’t stop.

“No regard for mankind” is what his neighbor is left saying as he hopes for his friend’s speedy recovery.

Anyone with any information is asked to call police. You can also call Crime Stoppers at (915) 566-TIPS (8477).
