Trash, Beer Bottles Litter Desert Following 4th of July Festivities

Guerino Panfile had plenty to clean up and only one day off to do it.

Panfile, who lives off Eastlake Blvd. near Horizon City, spent hours on Monday picking up fireworks wrappers, beer bottles and other trash left behind by 4th of July revelers.

“It takes pretty much all day,” he told ABC-7.

Panfile said this year’s mess was a little lighter thanks to large trash bins on the sides of the road.

It was a similar scene in Canutillo as a young man swept up outside a Dollar General store.

Over in Montana Vista, the cleanup crews sported orange and white jumpsuits.

For the second year in a row, the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office put jail inmates to work.

“It’s a good use of taxpayer money,” said Sheriff’s Office Commander Paul Cross. “We don’t have to pay anyone to come clean (the trash) up and the inmates also enjoy coming out here and getting a little sunshine.”
