Bullets Identified In El Paso City Hall Shooting
The two rounds that were recovered from El Paso City Hall from a June 29 shooting incident have been identified through lab testing as 9mm rounds.
“When I first went out there (to investigate the shooting), my first suspicion was a 7.62 (round) because that is a weapon and a round that has been very common historically, that has been used in shootings that have been occuring in Juarez. But that is by no means, the only weapon that is being used,” saisd Lt. Alfred Lowe of the Police Dept.’s Crimes Against Persons division.
Lowe explained, that while it is a surprise even to him, a 9mm was still the likely weapon used.
Police said the rounds were sent to the Dept. of Public Safety in El Paso for tests.
El Paso Police Dept.’s Crimes Against Persons continue to investigate the case and are in communication with Mexican law enforcement in Juarez because investigators believe the rounds may have been related to a shooting incident in Juarez that occurred at about the same time.
At about 5 p.m. June 29, a bullet traveled through a ninth floor window of El Paso City Hall, then through an interior wall, before striking a picture frame and stopping.
Further investigation revealed that the north and south stucco walls of City Hall were struck by an additional six rounds at varying heights on the walls.
El Paso City Hall does not appear to be the specific target of these rounds. City employees were inside City Hall during this incident. There were no reported injuries as a result of this round passing through the window.
