Manhunt Monday 11/24/08: Darrell Lewis
The Manhunt is on for DARRELL LEWIS
LEWIS is wanted for a Probation Violation stemming from previous Possession of Marijuana arrest back in 2007. Due to his recent arrest November 11th, LEWIS has violated the terms of his probation.
Sheriff’s Officials have confirmed that after his arrest on November 11, 2008 – LEWIS continued working as an instructor at a local martial arts establishment working with children. LEWIS knows he is wanted and is on the run eluding capture from authorities.
Early last week, a Law Enforcement CAUTION advisory was distributed among Law Enforcement Agencies as it was discovered that after his arrest on November 11, 2008- LEWIS stated to authorities he could have killed the Deputy he assaulted. The officer safety advisory went out to Law Enforcement in the event authorities made contact with LEWIS.
LEWIS has an extensive history of drug related arrests (marijuana) & is considered to be violent & dangerous.
SHERIFF’s OFFICIALS BELIEVE LEWIS REMAINS IN OUR AREA POSSIBLY STAYING WITH FRIENDS. A REMINDER TO ANYONE WHO MAY BE AIDING OR HIDING LEWIS THAT HINDERING THE APPREHENSION OF A FUGITIVE IS A FELONY.
According to the Texas Penal Code:
38.05. HINDERING APPREHENSION OR PROSECUTION.
(a) A person commits an offense if, with intent to hinder the arrest, prosecution, conviction, or punishment of another for an offense or, with intent to hinder the arrest, detention, adjudication, or with intent to hinder the arrest of another under the authority of a warrant or capias, he:
(1) harbors or conceals the other;
(2) provides or aids in providing the other with any means of avoiding arrest or effecting escape; or
(3) warns the other of impending discovery or apprehension.
(b) It is a defense to prosecution under Subsection (a)(3) that the warning was given in connection with an effort to bring another into compliance with the law. (c) Except as provided by Subsection (d), an offense under this section is a Class A misdemeanor. (d) An offense under this section is a felony of the third degree if the person who is harbored, concealed, provided with a means of avoiding arrest or effecting escape, or warned of discovery or apprehension is under arrest for, charged with, or convicted of a felony, including an offense under Section 62.102, Code of Criminal Procedure, or is in custody or detention for, is alleged in a petition to have engaged in, or has been adjudicated as having engaged in delinquent conduct that violates a penal law of the grade of felony, including an offense under Section 62.102, Code of Criminal Procedure, and the person charged under this section knew that the person they harbored, concealed, provided with a means of avoiding arrest or effecting escape, or warned of discovery or apprehension is under arrest for, charged with, or convicted of a felony, or is in custody or detention for, is alleged in a petition to have engaged in, or has been adjudicated as having engaged in delinquent conduct that violates a penal law of the grade of felony.
BACKGROUND: EL PASO, TEXAS- On Tuesday, 11-11-2008 at 8:30AM, a Sheriff’s Deputy conducted a traffic stop on a pickup truck at I-10 East, Mile Marker 33. During the stop, the Deputy noticed the driver was acting extremely nervous & suspicious. The Deputy instructed the subject to exit his truck to question him further. The driver suddenly proceeded to assault the Deputy then tried to flee on foot in a desperate attempt to get away. The Deputy gave chase and caught up to the the suspect and after a brief struggle, was finally able to place him into custody. A search of the truck revealed 58 pounds of marijuana which were hidden in duffle bags on the back seat. The subject was identified as Darrell Lewis (25) of the 7900 block of La Jolla. He was arrested & charged with POSSESSION OF MARIJUANA more than 50 lbs. but less than 2,000 lbs. & ASSAULT ON A PUBLIC SERVANT. Lewis was booked into the El Paso County Detention Facility & is currently out on bond. Lewis claims he is a local martial arts instructor.
