El Paso Native Finishes 2nd On Golf Reality TV Show
El Paso native Lili Alvarez finished second in Golf Channel’s Big Break: Sandals Resorts reality TV series this season.
Alvarez lost in match play to Carling Coffing on the final episode, which aired on Monday night.
“Before we get into Carling’s win, I must say a few words about this season’s runner-up, Lili Alvarez,” Brendan Havens, Producer of Big Break Sandals Resorts, said in a blog about the final match. “Even after such a heart wrenching defeat, Lili showed us how to carry oneself as a competitor and a true sportsman. She didn’t get angry; she didn’t play the “woe is me” card about the bad break; she didn’t blame anyone else for her loss. She just took it for what it is-a game and an experience. That, in itself, just shows how classy a competitor and how wonderful an ambassador to the game she is.”
Alvarez’s hometown is in Durango, Mexico. She took up golf at age 10 but did not take the game seriously until three years later. She represented Mexico in two Junior World Cups and won the International Foundation Junior Golf World Championship in 2000 and followed up with a third place finish in 2001.
Alvarez attended Tulane University in New Orleans on a golf scholarship.
A member of the Duramed FUTURES Tour for the past two years, Alvarez had a solid end to her 2009 campaign, making the cut in six of her final eight events of the year. In the opening event of the 2010 season, new LPGA Commissioner Michael Whan caddied for her during her opening round, an experience that she will never forget.
