Fort Bliss Celebrates ‘America Recycles Day’

Fort Bliss celebrated “America Recycles Day” early Monday afternoon by encouraging those on post to bring their recyclable materials to the recycling center.

Those who brought in plastic bottles and aluminum cans were treated to free pizza, lemonade and even recycling themed games to celebrate the day.

Fort Bliss Recycling Center Outreach Coordinator Stephanie Nebhan told ABC-7 why it is important to recycle, especially on post.

“Our landfill is going to be closing in about a year; and so if we have more room, we don’t have to be taking it elsewhere. If we take it elsewhere outside of the Fort Bliss landfill we are going to be charged dumping fees,” said Nebhan.

Those dumping fees can be decreased by recycling items that would normally be taking up space in the landfill.

El Paso’s curbside recycling program accepts the following items: ? Cardboard (flattened) ? Newspaper and magazines ? Brown paper bags ? White, colored and computer paper ? Junk mail and envelopes ? Paperboard (cereal, pasta, soda cartons) ? Phone books ? Water / Soda bottles ? Detergent bottles, milk jugs ? Aluminum cans ? Steel, tin and bimetallic cans ? Aluminum foil and baking tins

Items that cannot be recycled include: ? Plastic Containers with #3 through #7 ? motor oil containers ? glass ? plastic bags ? pizza boxes ? medical waste (needles, syringes, lancets) ? plastic dishes, bowls or toys ? milk/juice cartons (wax coated) ? pesticide/chemical containers

If you are unable to take advantage of the curbside recycling service, recyclables can be dropped off at various locations around the city. For the closest drop-off location, contact the city of El Paso Environmental Services Department at 915-621-6700.
