Sheriff Todd Garrison Re-Elected For Final Term

Politics aside and strictly back to public safety for Dona Ana County Sheriff Todd Garrison, re-elected Tuesday.

“It feels wonderful to finally have it over with and done,” Garrison said.

Taking down the signs that helped re-elect him to a second and final term, Garrison said he is happy the 9-month campaign is finished.

“I think people are sick and tired of this stuff and we want it to be gone,” Garrison said.

Running for office, while also running the Dona Ana County Sheriff?s Department was strenuous, Garrison said.

“When everybody is off just campaigning, it’s hard to do that,? Garrison said. ?You have to work both and make them fit, and its time consuming and takes over everything. It was difficult.”

But it worked. As maybe did a political ad showing him with New Mexico?s Governor Elect, Susana Martinez, who he plans to work closely with during the next 4 years, Garrison said.

“The picture that was portrayed as far as working together, especially on our border issues – which a lot of people are concerned about – is a good one, and I think that is something we’re going to address,? Garrison said.

After the last board is dissembled from his political signs, he will use his 26 years of law enforcement experience to lead his department in a new direction, Garrison said.

“We want the Sheriff’s Department and the community to feel like we’re in touch and not out of touch, and that’s one of the things we’re going to work real hard toward,” Garrison said.

But some goals will take time. The Sheriff said he needs to find funding to pay for them.

“The cost to fix our communications in this county like we need them fixed is about $28-Million, which nobody has. That kind of money just isn’t there, so we’re doing the best we can with what we do have.”

Garrison said, his department will also continue to work closely in assisting the newly incorporated city of Anthony.

Garrison is a graduate from Las Cruces High School. When asked about his prediction for Friday?s rivalry football game against Mayfield High School, Garrison told our New Mexico Mobile Newsroom he is rooting for the Bulldogs since his son plays on the team.
