Local Sun Bowl Tickets Sold Out; Tickets Still Available Through Teams

If you got them, good.

If you didn’t, then good luck!

Tickets for the much anticipated Notre Dame-Miami game are selling out fast.

Just a day after making the major announcement that the Hyundai Sun Bowl will host the two popular football schools, local tickets have sold out.

The only way left to purchase them is through the University of Miami or Notre Dame. Hyundai Sun Bowl officials said this morning they only had single tickets remaining and those went extremely fast!

People were lined up outside the door at the university ticket center prior to 7:30 a.m. And it was the same situation down the street at the Sun Bowl offices.

Then, well before noon, the announcement was made outside the Sun Bowl offices that no local tickets remained for the game. That means the sun bowl was able to sell more than 34,000 tickets — its local allotment for the 50,426-seat stadium — in less than a day.

That broke the record for the earliest sellout ever for the Sun Bowl, which previously was 10 days before the game, set last year for Stanford versus Oklahoma.

Hyundai Sun Bowl Executive Director Bernie Olivas was thrilled the tickets went so fast, but he said he wishes he had more seats to sell to El Pasoans for the big game.

“I wish our stadium right now held 100,000 people,” Olivas said. “But unfortunately it doesn’t and right now we’re officially sold out, which is kind of a good problem for us to have. But not a good problem for people who’d like to get a shot at Notre Dame against the University of Miami.”

Although the local allotment is gone, the participating schools still have their ticket allotments of 8,000 each. The best chance to get those is to log onto the Notre Dame or University of Miami web sites.

Sun Bowl officials said they may sell 300 standing room only tickets at some point, but it will take the game’s board to approve that at a later date.
