Las Cruces Woman Arrested After Allegedly Biting EMT

Las Cruces Police arrested a noticeably intoxicated woman who allegedly bit an emergency medical technician as he attempted to render aid at a local hospital, according to Las Cruces Police officials

Lisa Jones, 28, of the 1000 block of Wooten Drive on the New Mexico State University campus, was charged Thursday evening with one count of battery upon a health care worker. The charge is a fourth-degree felony.

LCPD detectives learned that NMSU police officers and firefighters, and an American Medical Response ambulance crew responded to Jones’ residence just before 7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 16, where the woman appeared to be heavily intoxicated and disorderly, according to police officials. Jones was transported to Memorial Medical Center but allegedly continued to be violent toward medical personnel, and was spitting at and biting objects near her face.

Police said a 28-year-old EMT was attempting to re-attach an oxygen mask over the patient’s face when Jones bit the man’s hand. The EMT attempted to free himself from Jones’ bite but was unable to do so until hospital personnel intervened.

The EMT had visible bruising to three fingers but was not seriously injured.

Jones was treated at the hospital for intoxication and was expected to be transferred to the Dona Ana County Detention Center with bond set at $5,000.
