Police: Thief Steals Candy, Flees In Wheelchair

El Paso Police arrested a 33-year-old man and charged him with aggravated robbery after he allegedly robbed a Downtown store on Sunday morning.

Esteban Alvarez, 33, of the 5200 block of Alameda, allegedly walked into the Family Dollar store located at 406 S. Stanton and allegedly stole candy and other items, which he placed inside the jacket he was wearing, according to police officials.

Alvarez left the store but was met by a store employee outside the store. Alvarez then allegedly produced a steel butterfly knife and struck the employee with the butt of the knife in the lower torso before fleeing the area in his wheelchair.

Alvarez was found by police in the 1200 block of Myrtle. He was arrested on the aggravated robbery charge and an outstanding warrant for assault/family dating and numerous municipal warrants.

His bonds were $53,789. 96. Officers did recover the weapon used during the commission of this incident, police said.
