Sun Bowl Teams Arrive In The Sun City

They’re here!

Players and coaches from the two teams going head to head on Dec. 31 for the Hyundai Sun Bowl touched down in El Paso this afternoon. They were greeted at the El Paso International Airport by football fans and mariachis.

“I just want to interact with the players…it’s going to be awesome!” said Hector Hernandez, a lifelong Miami Hurricanes fan. “It’s the best week of my life!” he exclaimed.

Notre Dame fans were also pumped up for their team’s arrival. ABC-7 spoke with the Medina family shortly after the Fighting Irish arrived. Their children’s names all have a Notre Dame connection. Their youngest daughter, for example, is named “Irish.”

Notre Dame got to El Paso first. Mariachis serenaded them as they walked through the airport. Coach Brian Kelly even took to the floor and danced to the mariachi music with his daughter Grace.

Not to be outdone, University of Miami interim coach Jeff Stoutland rocked a mariachi make-over when he and the rest of the team arrived a couple of hours later. “What a great welcome to our team. We’ve got to start tomorrow morning so we’re excited,” he said.
