Family Remembers Loved Ones Killed In Crash
The Gomez family is reeling from not one, but two devastating losses. They lost their loved ones in a crash after the car they were in slammed into a school bus.
“It’s tough when you lose one, but when you lose two, it’s infinitely more enormous,” said Daniel Amor, the victims’ relative.
Jennifer Gomez, 17, and her aunt Maria Gomez, 61, were killed Monday morning just before 8 a.m. at the intersection of Vista Del Sol and Bob Hope Drive on the far East Side. El Paso police said Maria Gomez ran a red light moments before the crash.
As family members struggled to hold back tears, they also struggled to understand how this could have happened.
“She wasn’t a speeder that’s going to go out and drive carelessly,” Amor said. “She followed the rules and the law. And it was a shock to me to find out how she died.”
The force of the crash was so powerful, it pushed the bus on its side.
Back at the Gomez home, loved ones waited while other family members made plans for the services. They remembered the two as being full of life.
“I’ll remember their smile. Their positive outlook. How happy they were, always,” Amor said “They never saw anything negative. It was always positive.”
The two lived together with Jennifer’s other siblings and her mother. Even in their death, family members said they take comfort knowing the two are together.
“Maria Gomez was like a second mother to Jennifer. She loved her very much. And Jennifer loved her equally as much,” Amor said. “That’s one of those bonds that you can’t break.”
