How A Government Shutdown Would Affect You

If the government shuts down on Friday, these are the different ways the people would be affected:

US POST OFFICE: – No interruption

IRS: – The tax-return du date will remain April 18th. – Taxpayers should e-file returns, because those are processed automatically and refunds will not be delayed – There will be delays in processing paper returns and providing refunds for paper returns

SOCIAL SECURITY: – Likely to continue sending out checks, but shutdown could affect new applicants

FEDERAL COURTHOUSE: – All the employees at the federal courthouse have been designated as “essential” – That means they will have to show up to work if there is a shutdown – Trials will also continue with no interruption

MILITARY OPERATIONS: – Operations ‘essential to safety’ are excepted from shutting down – Cont to conduct operations in Iraq, Afghanistan and Japan, Libya-related support operations – Beaumont Army Medical Center will continue to provide care

SOLIDER PAY: – Soldiers are generally paid twice a month – If shutdown, troops would receive half a paycheck for the first two weeks of April – After that, troops wouldn’t be paid until a deal is reached – They will receive back pay

MILITARY RETIREES: – Will continue to receive benefits

NATIONAL PARKS – Chamizal Nat’l Park, White Sands, Carlsbad Caverns, Guadalupe Nat’l Park – All access will be denied – If events are scheduled, they will be cancelled or postponed (this includes the mtg about the potential alcohol at the Chamizal) – Park rangers will be providing security at parks

PASSPORT – Normal processing will be halted
