El Paso Red Cross Disaster Services Respond To Ft. Davis Fire
The El Paso chapter of the American Red Cross has sent disaster services volunteers to help shelters with the fire burning in Fort Davis, about three hours away from the Sun City.
Officials have already estimated a need of at least $30,000 to help hundreds of families who have been affected by the Texas wildfires.
The volunteers left El Paso left Sunday morning. “Right now, it’s a critical time for the Red Cross. We do need monetary donations. This gives hope to the families who are being affected by disasters and this is what keeps dreams alive,” said Freddy Martinez, disaster services coordinator.
They’re trying to keep those dreams safe from the massive flames burning in Fort Davis and Marfa. The blaze seems relentless with more than 25,000 acres already in its fury.
“It’s always good to help people in time of need. You never know when I might need it,” said Pedro Burton, an El Paso Red Cross volunteer.
Help is needed for the more than 300 residents evacuated near Fort Davis. First responders have been working around the clock.
“I put myself in their position, I turn it around like if I’m the individual receiving the help – what do I want to receive from the American Red Cross?” Burton said.
Burton is one of those from El Paso who left to help with a shelter in Marfa. He said he’s going to watch out for first responders. “That’s basically what we’re going to do out there, supply them with food, drinks, whatever they need,” he said.
Burton and another person will be camping out and helping with anything they can, including taking supplies from El Paso.
“Just to see the smiles from them, and from the kids telling you ‘Thank you’ and running up to you and hugging you. There’s not enough words to express what I feel at times like that,” Burton explained.
The volunteers are expected to stay at least two days.
