Man Killed During SWAT Standoff In Fabens
Early Monday morning, at about 1 a.m., El Paso County Sheriff’s deputies were called to a residence in the 15000 block of Alameda, Fabens, just outside of Clint, in reference to an allegedly intoxicated male subject inside a residence with possible weapons.
According to the caller, the subject was threatening people at a gathering held at the residence, sheriff’s officials said.
Deputies, along with the assistance of United Stated Border Patrol Agents, arrived on scene minutes later and confirmed the same information relayed from dispatchers about a male subject on site threatening individuals while holding a shotgun, according to sheriff’s officials. Sheriff’s officials said additional information received indicated the subject was behaving violently and was highly intoxicated.
Deputies attempted to make contact with the subject who allegedly slammed the front door shut as deputies approached, telling authorities no one was going inside. Suddenly, gunshots were heard emitting from inside the home in the direction of the deputies and agents, according to sheriff’s officials. Authorities on site quickly took cover and set a perimeter around the home. The Sheriff’s Office Special Weapon & Tactics Team (SWAT) was called to the scene.
As SWAT Operators and Crisis Negotiators began arriving to the scene, the subject exited the residence through the front doorway holding a shotgun. After a brief stand off, the subject lowered the shotgun allegedly pointing it towards the direction of SWAT Operators / USBP Agents. At that instance, shots were fired and subject was fatally wounded. El Paso County Sheriff’s Office Crimes Against Persons Detectives responded to the scene & are continuing with the investigation.
The 46-year-old man who was fatally shot will not be identified at this time as an investigation continues, sheriff’s officials said.
The shooting is also being reviewed administratively by EPCSO Internal Affairs Division.
The Sheriff’s Office SWAT Operators involved in the shooting will not be identified at this time and have been placed on administrative leave with pay pending the outcome of the investigation. The total amount of rounds fired by the Deputies will not be released at this time as the investigation continues. An autopsy is scheduled for a later date.
