New Information on Deadly Hit & Run

New Information: According to the complaint affidavit, Rene Chacon’s girlfriend drove up to the scene and told a police officer her boyfriend was driving the car that hit Brian Gattis, 29.

Documents state she told the officer Chacon had called her and told her about the crash.

Previous story: The El Paso Police Department has made an arrest in the hit-and-run crash that killed Brian Gattis, 29.

Rene Chacon, 21, was booked on one count of Accident Involving Personal Injury or Death, as well as several outstanding traffic warrants. Chacon’s bond totaled: $36,873.

The investigation began just after 2:00 a.m. Friday when police responded to a hit and run collision that occurred in the 1200 block of Lee Trevino, police officials said.

The department’s Special Traffic Investigations Unit responded and determined that Gattis was crossing Lee Trevino when he was struck by a 1995 Honda Accord which was traveling north on Lee Trevino. The driver of the Honda Accord, Chacon, allegedly fled the scene and abandoned the vehicle in a parking lot located in the 1400 block of Lee Trevino.

This is the 22nd traffic related death of 2011 as compared to 21 at this time in 2010
