Historic Building In Segundo Barrio Gets Makeover

A historic building in the Segundo Barrio community gets a new look.

Community leaders gathered at the remodeling of 43 apartments that were destroyed by Storm 2006.

The apartments are located on the corner of Cotton St. and Sixth Ave and were remodeled only from the inside.

The outside of the buildings date back to 1910 and was left untouched.

Federal dollars in community block grants helped pay for the renovation.

“It is the only money that really makes a tangible difference in low income to moderate income families,” said Congressman Silvestre Reyes.

About a quarter of a million dollars in CDBG funding also helped pay for improvements made to the Colonia Verde Park in northeast El Paso.

Reyes says CDBG funding is less than one percent of the federal budget.
