UTEP Soccer To Open Season vs NMSU Friday
The UTEP soccer team will kick off its 2011 season by playing host to I-10 rival New Mexico State at 7 p.m. Friday at University Field.
There will be a pre-game tailgate from 5 to 7 p.m. to get in free to the match, while also having a chance to win some great prizes. Other promotions for the ?Break the Attendance Night? game include ?Camper Reunion Night,? with all soccer camp participants who wear their camp T-shirts receiving free admission to the match.
?We are very excited to get the 2011 season underway on Friday night,? UTEP head coach Kevin Cross said. ?I could not think of a more exciting way to start the 2011 soccer season than with the Battle of I-10 soccer rivalry. We are glad the game is at University Field, and are very thankful for El Paso and UTEP?s support of the UTEP soccer program.?
It marks the second official meeting between the programs. UTEP downed NMSU, 1-0, in overtime on Aug. 21, 2009, while last year?s tilt was cancelled due to weather.
The Miners return nine starters, including three seniors (Katie Dorman, MF, Chandra Morden, GK and Jessie Pettit, MF) and a trio of juniors (Tess Hall, MF, Brittany Kindzierski, F, and Skye Schultz, F). UTEP will be in search of its 10th straight winning season, all of which have featured 10+ victories.
UTEP is 12-3 in season openers, including 9-1 under Cross. It will be opening the campaign at home for the fourth straight year and ninth overall during the Cross era. The Miners are 7-1-0 in the situation.
The contest marks the first of 12 home games on the year for UTEP. The Miners will have five non-conference contests and seven of 11 within Conference USA play will be in the Sun City. UTEP stands at 78-12-3 at home since the start of the 2002 season.
