Woman Warns Potential Customers To Watch Out For Shady Contractors

A West El Paso woman is warning others to take extra precautions when it comes to hiring contractors to do work on their home.

Yvonne Mijares has filed a police report and hired an attorney to recover $1,200 from a man she alleges has not completed work he was hired to do.

“It’s been a nightmare,” said Mijares. “You don’t know how much you actually need your doors until something like this happens.”

Fifteen doors in Mijares’ home are gone. She hired a man named Ramon Vasquez, Jr., aka Ray, to take those doors out and replace them with new ones. However, weeks after the doors were taken out, nothing but bare hinges remain.

ABC-7 tried reaching Vasquez to get his side of the story, but Vasquez hung up the phone when asked to comment. After he learned ABC-7 wanted to get his side of the story, however, Vasquez called Mijares and told her he would need a week to give her money back to her.

To avoid a similar situation, Mijares recommends drafting a solid proposal with a contractor that includes an itemized list of materials and their cost along with a timeline for when work will be done. She also said people should triple-check references and be leery of any requests for cash up front.
