Police: Men Hid Cocaine Inside Cellphone

Two men were arrested after officers found cocaine hidden in a cellphone during a routine traffic stop shortly after 4:30 a.m. Tuesday in Northeast El Paso, police said.

Police said 21-year-old Daniel Lopez, who was driving a red Mitsubishi Eclipse, failed to execute a complete stop at a red light at the intersection of Rushing Road and Sun Valley Drive. Police said Lopez continued on to Debeers Drive and ran a stop sign at Shenandoah Street, where he was pulled over.

Officers conducted a search of the car and found a small bag containing .4 grams of cocaine by removing the back cover of a cellphone inside the car, police said.

Lopez, of the 5300 block of Capistrano Drive, and 20-year-old Mark Layman, of the 10000 block of Kellogg Street, were arrested on suspicion of possession of controlled substance. They were booked into the El Paso Court Jail.

Police said Lopez had 10 outstanding municipal court warrants and his bond was set at $4,166.

Layman had two outstanding municipal court warrants.
