Mother Sentenced In Death Of 7-Month-Old Daughter

A mother who pleaded guilty in the death of her 7-month-old daughter was sentenced to 10 years in federal prison Monday morning.

Leesa Trujillo, 31, on May 11 pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter and injury to a child in front of U.S. District Judge Frank Montalvo in connection with the Aug. 10, 2009, death of her child at Fort Bliss.Montalvo also ordered Trujillo to four years of probation after serving her term

A co-defendant, 30-year-old Thelton Andres Riley, Jr., pleaded guilty to murder. Riley is scheduled to be sentenced at 2 p.m. Sept. 20 before Montalvo.

According to court documents, Riley and Trujillo admitted that while living on the Laguna Indian Reservation in New Mexico in June 2009, they engaged in a pattern of child abuse, which resulted in the child having a broken arm, broken legs and several broken ribs.

Records show that Riley and Trujillo took the child to Fort Bliss so that Riley could receive medical treatment at Beaumont Army Medical Center. Riley and Trujillo admitted that they never sought medical attention and instead, Riley gave the child Oxycodone and hydrocodone to keep the child quiet.
