EPISD: Investigation Into District Website Hacking Continues

The El Paso Independent School District said it is continuing to work with the FBI in its investigation of the district’s Intranet breach and that the FBI has not found any indication that the information breached has been used maliciously.

“The FBI continues to vigorously investigate the computer intrusion incident at the El Paso Independent School District,” said W. Jay Abbott, acting special agent in charge. “To date, there is no indication that Social Security number information maintained on the compromised server was used for malicious purposes.”

In a news release issued by the district, Abbott said there is no indication there was any financial information, such as banking or credit card information, compromised as result of the intrusion.

The FBI will continue to recommend vigilance regarding sensitive identity information.

“Given the ongoing nature of the investigation, the FBI does not want to discourage anyone from taking protective measures such as conducting personal credit information checks and/or taking steps to monitor personal credit information as recommended by the El Paso Independent School District,” Abbott said.

The District has launched a special webpage “Protect Your Identity” on episd.org with guidance and links to agencies that deal specifically with preventing identity theft.
