El Paso Man Held In Juarez Is Transferred To US Prison

Kevin Huckabee, the father of jailed American Shohn Huckabee tells ABC7 that his son was transferred to a U.S. prison in September under a U.S. prison transfer program.

Shohn Huckabee and a friend, Carlos Quijas, were arrested by Mexican soldiers for alleged possession of marijuana. The soldiers claimed the two had suitcases full of drugs inside their pickup.

The Mexican soldiers used a GT 200 Molecular Detector to detect the alleged drugs. The instrument has come under a lot of criticism because readings have been found to be fraudulent at times.

Eyewitnesses testified in a trial that they saw soldiers plant drugs in the truck.

However, a Mexican court found Huckabee and Quijas guilty and sentenced them to five years in prison. The pair was serving time in the Cereso prison in Juarez. Quijas was transferred and remains in a prison in Las Islas Marias, but is also in the process of being transferred to the U.S.

A U.S. judge has declined to assess any U.S. prison time to Shohn Huckabee. He is in the process of filling out necessary paperwork and could be released within a month.
