Friend Of Drunk Driving Victims Works To Make Dangerous Road More Safe
More than 10 percent of El Paso traffic fatalities this year have occurred on the same stretch of Loop 375 between Montana Avenue and Railroad Drive.
Earlier this year, two 16-year-old boys were struck and killed by an alleged drunken driver while they were helping a friend on the side of the road.
The victim’s friend, Israel Morales, is working to make the area safer.
He said he can’t stop someone from driving drunk, but said part of the problem is the lack of lighting in the area.
Morales has brought the issue before the state to get the issue fixed.
“We also did talk about the project we are going to do on Loop 375 and it has been approved by the state where they are going to insert road illuminations and they are also going to change the signs because the reflective level is too low,” said Morales.
Even with approval, Morales said it could take up to five years before the project is complete.
But in the end, he said it’s all worth it.
“I just don’t want any other person to go through the feeling that I went through and that so many other people went through. It’s just something I don’t want anyone to go through,” said Morales.
Just moments after talking to Morales, a few miles down the road from where his friends were killed, a car spun out an rolled over.
No one was injured, but we spoke with one of the first responders who said accidents are common on this stretch of road and blames the lack of poor lighting for many of the incidents.
