Puppies Tossed On Dyer Street, Left To Die

Puppies were tossed out on the side of Dyer Street, deserted and left to die.

A Fort Bliss soldier told ABC-7 that’s exactly what he witnessed Sunday afternoon in Northeast El Paso.

“I think they’re horrible people,” Fort Bliss soldier Joshua LeValley said Monday afternoon.

The Florida native and his wife Regina couldn’t believe what happened on a long stretch of Dyer Street.

“There’s no telling how fast he was going,” said LeValley, who was driving down Dyer Street, going about 45 mph, when he saw a white, early-90’s Toyota pickup pull to the side of the road, slow down just slightly, and throw a canvas bag like out the window. “It looked kind of how you’d toss a bottle out of the window or something. He just chucked it out with no care.”

LeValley said he and another man noticed the bag moving and stopped. When they opened it, they found six 4-to 5 week-old mixed-breed puppies inside, including two that LeValley took home and named Bo and Dixie.

“It was heartbreaking because they are God’s creatures,” said Regina LeValley. “They’re not even weaned yet. They still need their mom. They’re crying all night looking for their mom.”

Betty Hoover, executive director of the Humane Society of El Paso, called it “a complete tragedy” and “an inhumane act.”

Hoover said there are much better options than tossing puppies on the side of the road.

“Come to the Humane Society, go to animal services, go to the animal rescue league,” Hoover said. “Any of the rescue groups will try to help the animals as much as possible. Killing them is not the answer.”

LeValley said the other man who stopped took the other four puppies home.

Animal cruelty is a Class A misdemeanor, punishable by a fine of up to $4,000 and possible jail time.
