Details Of Monday Morning’s Deadly Shootings Emerge

El Paso police have identified three Fort Bliss soldiers who were involved in a series of Monday morning shootings that left two dead and one injured.

Police said that James Steadman, 41, arrived at the residence of Kelvin and Lykisha Gooding around 6:42 a.m. Steadman met Kelvin Gooding at the door of the home located in the 3700 block of Coco Palm Drive and allegedly shot Gooding in the face one time.

Steadman, according to police, continued upstairs where he shot Lykisha Gooding several times. Gooding died at the scene.

Crimes Against Persons investigators said Steadman then ran from the home, but not before exchanging gunfire with Kelvin Goodman. Steadman was shot in the upper thigh but managed to flee the scene.

Police say a young child who was inside the home when the shootings began was able to escape the scene unharmed.

Steadman arrived at his home in the 8900 block of Kenneth Street around 7:30 a.m., according to police. Investigators said he got into a fight with a woman inside his home, which ended in him being shot again. Steadman died at the scene.

Police still declined to explain the connection between the three shooting victims, but said they are not strangers.

Meanwhile, details of the victims have begun to emerge. Lykisha Gooding was a soldier, but she was also an aspiring country music singer. YouTube videos of Lykisha Gooding singing at a Fort Bliss talent competition reveal a woman with a voice and a dream.

Her personal webpage, which highlights her musical career, says she was married and had three children. Police confirmed that Kelvin Goodman, the lone surviving victim, was her husband.

Neighbors of the Gooding family declined to go on camera, but expressed their sorrow over Monday?s incident. Several people mentioned that they didn?t know Lykisha Gooding well, but that she was always friendly to everyone around her.

Police have not released the name of the woman who shot and killed James Steadman, police have yet to release her name. El Paso Police Spokesman Michael Baranyay says the case is being ruled a homicide, but said that doesn?t rule out self-defense.

?At this point we can’t say there are going to be, or that there aren?t going to be, any charges against the female that was involved in that altercation,? said Baranyay.
